SQUARETACTICS
pre-alpha build - v0.2
-------------------------------------------------------------
What this game is
Chess-like rouge-like tactics game played on a square(ish) board. Moves are taken in turns till one player checkmates the others' king, as in chess.
Where ST rules deviate from other chess-like games is the piece setup - players build their own army of pieces, giving each piece attributes by spending points on movements and a pool of special abilities.
Players design armies and engage in one of several different ‘formats’ which specify the shape of the board (8x8, 10x10, 8x12, etc.) and a ‘point profile’ for that format - the point value of each piece in an army for that format.
At the start of each match, piece location is shuffled in the manner of chess 960, so armies can't be optimized to win a particular board layout, and ensure every match is true tactical test of skill.
Runs
Players design pieces and armies, and take them on a roguelike gauntlet of matches, striving to win a series tense tactical battles. Bucking the typical rougelike convention, power growth comes from customizing and compounding your tactical flexibility as the run progress, accumulating more pieces to customize what you bring to any match, revealing more information about enemy composition, and earning more attempts to retry losses.
